Dasenech: From Wasteland to Africa’s Renewable Energy Center

Dasenech: From Wasteland to Africa’s Renewable Energy Center

During March, a large power plant has been built in February 2025 in southern Ethiopia recouped more than 10% of the project's cost.

We completed the construction of the largest solar power plant in southern Ethiopia. This facility is located near the village of Dasenech and covers an area of over 30 hectares. It has an installed capacity of 60 megawatts, generating more than 110,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year. Already from the first weeks, the plant began to supply stable energy not only to Dasenech itself, but also to seven other adjacent settlements within a radius of ten kilometers.

We paid special attention to the expansion of infrastructure within a radius of 13 kilometers from the power plant. This perimeter included not only the village of Dasenech, but also several neighboring communities that needed basic support. We rehabilitated and built more than 18 kilometers of roads, established logistics for the delivery of construction and food materials, and installed power lines, ensuring a stable power supply throughout this area. In addition, a water distribution system has been established, waste collection and recycling facilities have been opened, and storage and maintenance stations have been set up for staff.

The plant generates an average of about 9,200 megawatt hours of electricity per month, which is equivalent to providing power to more than 60,000 households. This not only covers the current needs of the villages, but also provides reserves for future connection of new industrial facilities, schools, health facilities and farms.

In March, the solar plant started generating its first profit. This confirmed the sustainability of the chosen model. The demand for electricity in the region is steadily growing, and with it the interest of industrial and agricultural enterprises, which have started to develop their production near the station.

We have already started preparing the second stage. The preparation of the second phase implies - it is planned to expand the network of stations within a radius of 150 kilometers from Dasenech, as well as to create an additional 10,000 jobs. We believe that solar energy can not only power equipment, but also inspire people, give them back their confidence and create points of growth on a continent rich in resources and potential.
